Dough / Body / Flesh
2020, 50 x 50cm
Photo of time-sensitive immersive installation with yeast dough, cotton thread, wood, metal, cotton cloth, headphones and MP3 player.

The yeasted dough of the karavai (traditional Eastern European bread) is an object of exploration since traditionally its making involves folk song to imbue it with energy to carry to its consumer. An enriched, smooth, flesh-like object is then stitched into producing an almost visceral reaction through its resemblance to something of human origin. Over time on display, the dough rises, pulling on the stitches and filling out drawers and bowls, somewhat spilling over. But having reached its peak, it forms a film and can be pressed to "wilt" and wrinkle. This photograph is of a sensory installation experience accompanied by spoken word available in attached headphones, it is a reflection on the fruition of culture in moments of freedom, alike the one in 1917-32.
